REPORT: Pistons Sign Point Guard Jose Calderon

(Tony Dejak/AP) The Detroit Pistons have added a quality backup point guard to the fold. According to ESPN’s Chris Haynes Detroit has signed 36-year-old Jose Calderon to a one-year $2.4 million contract.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js This signing gives the Pistons another veteran option behind starter Reggie Jackson. They now have Ish Smith, Dwight Buycks, and Calderon backing up the oft-injured Jackson. It is more than likely someone will be cut as a result, with Buycks perhaps on the chopping block. Calderon spent last season with the Eastern Conference champion Cleveland Cavaliers. He averaged 4.5 points per game on just over 50 percent shooting and 46.3 percent from 3-point range. While it is a dubious title, before the Cavaliers traded for George Hill, Calderon was most consistent Cleveland point guard last season. He provides pretty decent shooting, but is an immediate defensive liability. Detroit acquired Calderon back in January, 2013 in a three-team trade with the Toronto Raptors and Memphis Grizzlies.
