The Detroit Pistons are reportedly finalizing a contract extension with head coach Dwane Casey, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN. Casey's original five-year contract still has two seasons remaining and this extension will add one more year to his contract, taking the 64-year-old through the 2023-24 season with Detroit.
This move confirms that Casey will remain in Detroit for the long run, as there were some question marks as to whether the veteran coach would stick around through a rebuild. But, after a pleasantly surprising season that featured a number of young players flourishing under the new coaching regime, Casey seems dedicated to this group - and Troy Weaver seems to be dedicated to Casey.
Through a 20-50 record this season marking the start of a franchise rebuild, Pistons general manager Troy Weaver has been enthusiastic over Casey and his coaching staff's development of the franchise's young players -- including rookie first-round picks Saddiq Bey and Isaiah Stewart -- and the competitive force of an undermanned roster, sources said.
With another season added to his contract, the hope is that Dwane Casey will be the coach that finally leads Detroit to their first playoff win since 2008.
