According to Shams Charania and James Edwards III of The Athletic, the Detroit Pistons are expected to reach a buyout agreement with power forward Blake Griffin.
From their report:
The two teams have been pegged by rival teams as sellers. Sources tell me and The Athletic’s James Edwards III that the Pistons are expected to work toward a contract buyout with forward Blake Griffin, and sharpshooter Wayne Ellington is expected to receive interest from contending teams.
Griffin, who is away from the team while the Pistons decide how they will move on from the six-time all-star, struggled mightily this season in just 20 games. He has averaged a career-low in points per game and shot under 37% from the field.
It is unclear as to the terms of what a buyout between Griffin and the Pistons could look like. Griffin left the team in February after the Pistons decided they wanted to move forward with their young core, including forwards Jerami Grant, Saddiq Bey, and Sekou Doumbouya, eliminating the 31-year old from the rotation.
The Pistons were hopeful to be able to deal Griffin rather than having to buy him out, but it appears that they would have had to attach assets to Griffin to trade him and his $36.5 million contract with a near $40 million player-option for the 2021-2022 season.
More information could develop quickly as the NBA All-Star Break draws near and the trade and buyout market heat up.
