REPORT: Pistons Apply for Disabled Player Exception for Blake Griffin

Shams Charania of The Athletic has reported that The Pistons have applied for a 9.2 million dollar disabled player exception for 30 year old Power Forward Blake Griffin.

This entails Blake’s season may very well be over, following an Arthroscopic knee surgery. If the Pistons were granted this exception, they would be able to sign a current free agent to a one year contract, trade for a player on the final year of their contract, or claim a player on the final year of their contract. The current problem for Detroit is that they are incredibly close to the luxury tax, and it is hard to imagine owner Tom Gores going into the tax as of now with the way the Pistons have been performing.

The exception could come of use depending on what the Pistons do in the trade market, specifically with Andre Drummond. The New York Knicks were reported to be interested in Drummond tonight. They join a group of teams interested in the two-time all-star.
