REPORT: Pistons Agree to Trade Derrick Rose to New York Knicks

The Detroit Pistons are nearing an agreement with the New York Knicks that would send point guard Derrick Rose to New York in exchange for Dennis Smith Jr. and draft compensation, according to Shams Charania and James Edwards III of The Athletic.

Dennis Smith Jr. has appeared in just three games with New York this season playing just 28 total minutes. The 23-year old guard had fallen out of favor in New York, with point guards Elfrid Payton and rookie Immanuel Quickley cementing themselves as the top two point guards on the Knicks' roster. Smith was traded to New York in 2019 as part of the trade that sent Kristaps Porzingis to the Dallas Mavericks. Smith will likely have a chance to play in Detroit, with Delon Wright serving as the only point guard currently.

The Knicks add Derrick Rose to a competitive roster and a franchise determined to return to the NBA playoffs and out of the depth of mediocrity. In 15 games this season, Rose has averaged 14.2 points and 4.2 assists per game.

It is still unclear what draft compensation Detroit will receive from New York. The Knicks own Detroit's 2nd round draft pick along with Charlotte's 2nd round draft pick as well.

Smith comes to Detroit as a flier for Dwane Casey to work with. With Christian Wood last season and Josh Jackson this season having career seasons and figuring out their respective careers, Troy Weaver is hoping that DSJ will have that same revival.
