Charania has not yet reported any further on the details of the extension.
Weaver joined the Pistons organization in June of 2020 and immediately impacted the organization's direction. He led the Pistons through the 2020 NBA Draft - in which the Pistons left with Killian Hayes, Saddiq Bey, and Isaiah Stewart - all first-round draft selections. That same offseason, he signed Jerami Grant to a three-year contract, the Pistons' most prominent free agent acquisition in years.
After a 20-52 record in the first season of his tenure - in which Weaver traded away Derrick Rose and bought out Blake Griffin - the Pistons landed the 1st pick in the 2021 NBA Draft and selected Cade Cunningham.
This past summer Weaver orchestrated a draft day trade to acquire Jalen Duren - leaving the draft with Jaden Ivey and the promising young center out of Memphis. Before the draft, he dealt Jerami Grant to Portland for draft capital.
After a late offseason trade to acquire Bojan Bogdanovic from the Utah Jazz, the Pistons are once again at the bottom of the standings at 8-25, the worst record in the NBA. Weaver and the Pistons are in a tough spot. Shortly after the Pistons agreed to a contract extension with Bogdanovic, Cade Cunningham suffered what turned out to be a season-ending shin injury. Now, reports are swarming that Bogdanovic is available in trade talks - along with Saddiq Bey, Alec Burks, and Nerlens Noel - the opposite of what was anticipated to be a competitive season.
Weaver came to Detroit, stripped the roster down to its core, and reassembled it to his liking through the draft and a handful of trades. Tom Gores - and whoever else was involved in the decision-making process to extend Weaver - possess a lot of faith in Weaver to extend him. The Pistons will finish with one of the worst records in the league once again this year - an issue that usually coincides with general managers and coaches losing their jobs - not getting extensions mid-season.
With the NBA's trade season officially under commencement, all eyes will be on Weaver and how he addresses the current state of the team over the rest of the season. Some believe he will keep Bogdanovic and Burks, unless a king's ransom comes his way. Others believe he's posturing for the right deal to come along.
All that being said, Weaver now has the job security to make any and every move with the trajectory of this season continuing to trend in a negative direction. Will he use the current assets of the organization to improve the roster - or will he sell off Detroit's most enticing pieces to load up on draft capital to spend in the future?
