Report: Details on Why Shannon Brown's NBA Comeback was Cut Short by Drive

The Grand Rapids Drive selected former Los Angeles Lakers guard Shannon Brown in the 2nd round of the NBA D-League Draft on October 30th.

Brown went to camp with the Drive but was waived before the season began. In a recent interview with the head coach of the Grand Rapids Drive, Rex Walters, he told me why Brown was waived.

"Shannon (Brown) did nothing wrong," Walters said. "He came with a great attitude. He had an injury that set him back. After the first day, he tweaked his knee and it was to the point where he couldn't go. Now he's really worked on his rehab."

Walters and the Drive would like to bring back Brown when he returns to full health.

"We're hoping that he gets healthy. We'd love at some point to bring him back. We're still staying in touch with him. He's a phenomenal a guy and it would have been great to have him in the locker room and the court quite honest."

Brown averaged 7.6 points and 1.9 rebounds in his nine-year NBA career. Besides playing with the Lakers, Brown spent time with the Pheonix Suns, Cleveland Cavaliers, Charlotte Bobcats, New York Knicks, San Antonio Spurs, Chicago Bulls, and Miami Heat.

The Drive also waived 7'6 center Mamadou N'Diaye, who was signed by the Pistons and then waived in order for the Drive to hold his D-League rights. Walters also explained to me as to why the move was made to cut N'Diaye. '

"With Mamadou, the speed of the game was the biggest thing for him. Once he gets down the court he's pretty good but getting him down there was so hard."

It also did not help that 6'11 big man Nikola Jovanovic, who was also signed and waived by the Pistons to hold his D-League rights, had a fantastic camp. The Drive's first round draft pick in the draft, Chris Horton, also played extremely well.

"Nik (Nikola Jovanovic) and Chris Horton really stepped up. They were so good in camp. It was a decision for his best interest to get an opportunity for him to play. It was better to get him a chance where he could go somewhere where he could practice and play," said Walters.
