Report: Andre Drummond's Representatives have "requested extension talks" with Pistons

Image: Duane Burelson/Associated Press Andre Drummond has a player option for the 2020-2021 season. He is expected to decline the option and become an unrestricted free agent for the first time in his career.  But that doesn't mean he wants out of Detroit. According to Vincent Ellis of the Detroit Free Press, Drummond's representatives have "requested extension talks" with the Detroit Pistons:

The Pistons’ response?

That’s still to be determined.

Ellis later stated to expect the Pistons to offer Drummond an extension before the season begins, but at what level of pay, that is still up in the air.

It’s not clear if Drummond expects a max contract to agree to an extension. Expect the Pistons to make an offer before the season, but the outcome is uncertain — unlike the lead up to him signing of a max contract in the 2016 offseason.

If Drummond decides to play it out, he could be entering his final days with the franchise that drafted him in the first round of the 2012 NBA draft.

Drummond, 26, averaged 17.3 points, a league-leading 15.6 rebounds, 1.7 blocks, 1.7 steals, and 1.4 assists per game last season.

He is a two-time all-star and the best rebounder in the league. Last season, his defensive game saw huge progression, as for the first time in his career, he was a menace down low and he truly anchored Detroit's defense. With this being a contract year for Drummond all eyes will be on him and his play. But for now, his contract status is still largely in question.
