Pistons Sign Justin Harper to a 10-Day Contract
Shams Charnia of The Vertical reported last night that the Detroit Pistons have signed power forward Justin Harper to a 10-Day contract. Harper has played in the D-League all season, for the Los Angeles D-Fenders.
Harper is a big body that Detroit desperately needs. He's a 6'10 combo big with abilities that should help him be a factor when he plays. Harper will fit will in Detroit's offensive system, as he shoots over 40% from the three-point line. Harper is averaging 14.8 points and 5 rebounds on the season and 1.7 assists on the season. Justin Harper played for the Pistons in Summer League. With Detroit he averaged 8 points and 4.6 rebounds in 19.8 mpg. He shot 34% from the three-point line in the D-League.
Harper will have a chance to play right away for the injury plagued Pistons. Anthony Tolliver is out 2-4 weeks with a sprained leg, Stanley Johnson sprained his shoulder on Monday night, and the Pistons-Rockets trade has fallen apart. This means Donatas Motiejunas will not be an option for the Pistons.
Harper is a Stan Van Gundy player. He played with Van Gundy back when they were both part of a playoff Orlando Magic team. Harper is not going to become a starter by any means, but he could be a viable option for the Pistons who need a big body at power forward.
As we saw yesterday, Marcus Morris and Tobias Harris cannot guard bigger power forwards such as Kevin Love for an entire game. They can guard a bigger four for spurts but having a 6'10 power forward will help.
