Pistons GM Troy Weaver was largely met with skepticism when he selected the former Iowa Hawkeye and Naismith Award winner in the second round of the 2021 NBA Draft. Despite Garza averaging an eye-popping 24 points and 9 rebounds a game his senior season, critics cited a lack of defensive foot speed as a major flaw in his game. Garza, however, reportedly lost 30 pounds while preparing for the draft and has excelled in the NBA's Las Vegas Summer League, including a 20 point, 14 rebound performance in his last game against the Los Angeles Lakers.
With the Pistons still expected to re-sign shooting guard Hamidou Diallo, their only real option to keep Garza on the roster in any capacity was a two-way contract. While Garza is unlikely to receive major playing time in his rookie season, he's quickly become a favorite of many Pistons fans with his skilled offensive game, non-stop motor and entertaining soundbites. Garza's father has also become a hit, often posting his son's workout videos on Twitter and tagging fans and media members alike. Luka will likely get a chance to celebrate his new contract in the Pistons final Summer League game, tonight against the Orlando Magic.
