Motor City Cruise Acquire Jontay Porter from the Wisconsin Herd

The Motor City Cruise, G League affiliate of the Detroit Pistons, have acquired 23-year-old center Jontay Porter from the Wisconsin Herd for Kyler Edwards and Jaime Echenique according to an official press release. James L. Edwards III of The Athletic had it first that Porter was signed to Exhibit 10 contract by the Pistons, indicating that Porter will be around for training camp. Porter was a highly-touted recruit out of high school (as high as 11th overall via ESPN), signing with his brother, Michael, to play for the University of Missouri. In 33 games with the Tigers, Porter averaged 9.9 points and 6.8 rebounds per game.

After an injury-riddled tenure with Missouri, Porter went undrafted in the 2019 NBA Draft before signing with the Memphis Grizzlies. He only appeared in 11 games, in very limited minutes, before being waived in July 2021. Porter then played for the Denver Nuggets in Summer League last year before spending the regular season with the Milwaukee Bucks G League team, the Wisconsin Herd. In 17 games with the Herd, Porter averaged 11.5 points, 11.5 rebounds, and 2.8 blocks per game.
The Pistons are exceptionally deep with big men, so it is extremely unlikely that Porter will see time with the NBA squad this season barring some catastrophic injuries. If Porter plays well enough in training camp and the preseason, at best he would stick with the Pistons' G League team, the Motor City Cruise.
