Morris had a player option for the 2020-2021 season that is also included in the buyout, and the salary gets paid in full for this season. Markieff Morris joins Reggie Jackson as the second Piston to get bought out post trade-deadline.
Morris did not play in Thursday's game, while not being listed on the injury report. Averaging 11 points and shooting 39.7% from three, Markieff will provide quality scoring for a contender.
As for the Pistons, this buyout indicates rookie Sekou Doumbouya's role will be growing exponentially, and will let the Pistons front office now how far along he is in his development. Doumbouya played 34 minutes in Thursday's game against the Milwaukee Bucks and scored 8 points along with 5 rebounds, and 3 assists.
The Pistons also have an additional open roster spot, which could be filled by G-League players such as; Dont'a Hall or Louis King.
